Things to do in Aspen besides Skiing

One of my favorite things to do in Aspen besides skiing is taking in the Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series shows, co-sponsored by the Aspen Skiing Company.

The FREE Bud Light Hi-Fi outdoor concerts are among the more popular nighttime, off-hill winter events in Aspen, entertaining  young and old and visitors and locals alike. The series features an eclectic mix of musical genres, such as folk and bluegrass, reggae, jazz, dance rock and roll, and country. It has showcased such acts as Elephant Revival, Savoy, Cash’d Out, Black Uhuru, The Magnificent 7, and Reverend Horton Heat.

This family-friendly event series typically debuts on Thanksgiving weekend, often coinciding with the Aspen Winternational ski races in November, and continues periodically through March. The concerts are held in various venues in Aspen and Snowmass, culminating in a “Core Party” near the end of the season.

This year, the concert series started off with a bang, featuring Reel Big Fish, an American ska/punk band perhaps best known for their 1997 hit, “Sell Out”, and a festive fireworks show over Little Nell on Aspen Mountain.  Reel Big Fish fired up the lively crowd with an energetic mix of originals and ska-inspired covers of such songs as "Kiss Me Deadly" by Lita Ford.

The show was great, but I got a little cold out there on the snowy slopes without snow boots and more layers, lulled into complacency by the relatively comfortable daytime, in-town temperatures. At least I remembered my ski hat.  It was a good thing that the band instigated a lot of audience participation in terms of jumping up and down and all around so that we could all warm up!

Here’s the rest of the upcoming Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series as it stands right now:

January 24th – SBCR DJ Set (The Bloody Beetroots)
Gondola Plaza, Aspen Mountain

February 14th – Band TBA
Gondola Plaza, Aspen Mountain

March 13th – Umphrey's Mcgee
Downtown Aspen (Bud Light Core Party)

March 21st – Band TBA
Snowmass Base Village

March 27th – Band TBA
Snowmass Base Village

I plan on making some more of these shows to fill in my calendar with things to do in Aspen besides skiing, but next time I’ll remember to dress appropriately for the cold!
