Things to do in Aspen - Cross-Country Ski Extravaganza

Every year, I look forward to the Cross-Country Extravaganza at the Aspen Municipal Golf Course! It has become one of my favorite things to do in Aspen during the winter.
The Extravaganza is a great opportunity to test out new cross-country gear (skating and classic) and on top of that, one can also take advantage of free lessons in either discipline as well. Of course there’s more – a free ski hot wax, food and an extensive raffle before it all wraps up.
As usual, this year’s event was a little chaotic because it is one of the more popular things to do in Aspen in January. Although many of the attendees are obviously cross-country skiing aficionados, I think that many people who normally choose to alpine ski take advantage of this free opportunity for chaotic, crazy fun, especially when the weather is fantastic like it was on Sunday
Despite the bedlam, everyone there seemed to be having a great time thanks to the eager vendors, incredibly hard-working staff, knowledgeable instructors, and fantastic weather.
I, myself, arrived at the scene just in time to catch up with the 12:30 intermediate skating lesson, and I was rewarded for my efforts with some great instruction, enough time left over to practice what I’d learned, and eventually the raffle.

I returned my rented poles just as the raffle started and I listened intently, waiting for my lucky number to come up -- it never did. Well, maybe it did, but I couldn’t stick it out until the end as my stomach began to growl.

After a very satisfying cheeseburger at the Red Mountain Grill, it was time to leave and partake in one of other favorite things to do in Aspen besides cross-country skiing – taking a nap on Sunday afternoon.
